We’re delighted to add the 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat, in Luray, Virginia, with deeded Shenandoah River access, to the Massanutten Springs family of vacation properties and look forward to sharing its awesome history with our guests! Abe Kibler and his wife, “Aunt Lizzie,” owned, built and tended bar in the historic stone tavern, and in bygone years, created their own Rock Tavern tradition of hospitality. In past years, guests competed in shooting matches, where winners took home salt-cured hams or turkeys, or purchased any of the unique items offered for sale: hand-made marbles, a mink fur pelt brought in by an area trader, or an arrow head.
Today, guests of the 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat in Luray, Virginia, experience that same tradition, preserved in its walls: the initials “ATK” and “1947” (the year that the original Rock Tavern was built) are carved into the original, richly colored, hand-laid, natural Massanutten Mountain stone that features in the Retreat’s interior decor. Framed articles and other decorative touches that evoke Rock Tavern’s early history in Page County, Virginia add to the Retreat’s “Tavern” atmosphere, as a Page County landmark-turned-vacation cabin-retreat returns to our family (and yours!) once again.

Our Name
The Candy Hill name comes from an interesting past. No, it is not what most guess, we are not candy givers nor are we a Christmas themed park. The truth behind the story is that years ago there was a farm house where our campground now stands and as a story book would say, there was a little girl who lived there. She had a dog who passed away and was buried on the hill behind the farm house and luck have it, the dogs name was Candy. From then on the hill was referred to as Candy’s Hill, hence our name, Candy Hill Campground.
The Lafayette Inn & Restaurant are proud to announce that we’ve become the first Restaurant and Inn in the region to be acknowledged for our Green commitment by complying with the requirements set forth in the new Virginia Green program.
Built in 1840, The Lafayette Inn is a historic landmark. It has served as a community centerpiece of the area accommodating the needs of stage coach travelers and local residents. The building has served as a hotel, restaurant, saloon, boarding house and as a hospital during the Civil War. In more recent times it housed the first Stanardsville telephone exchange and the local newspaper.
The Lafayette is designed in Federalist style with three levels and sweeping colonnaded porches. The frame is of hand-hewn mortise and tenon beams with fifteen-inch-thick walls of local red brick.

It’s hard to imagine, but the Shenandoah Valley was once the floor of a great inland sea. Centuries ago, as that sea receded, the forces of nature carefully etched out an awe-inspiring formation of solid rock. The seven Natural Chimneys tower as much as 120 feet above the pastoral terrain of the Shenandoah Valley, offering onlookers a sight unrivaled in majesty.
Viewed from one angle, the formations resemble enormous chimneys standing in bleak contrast to the greenery of the Valley. Take a few steps, though, and the chimneys are transformed into the massive turrets of a foreboding medieval castle.
Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia offers more than simply the splendor of towering limestone formations. Both day visitors and those who choose to stay overnight in the seasonal campground find plenty of space and opportunities for recreation, relaxation and fellowship. The park is open for day use from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
We are located just minutes from so many attractions to the area like:
Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park, Kayaking, Tubing, Canoeing, Hiking,Photography Workshops and Classes, Fishing (onsite at the campground!!), Luray Caverns, Skyline Caverns, Andy Guest State Park, Luray Zoo, Historic Civil War Trails, Zip Lines and much more……

It all started back when…. Mr. John U. Miller Sr. purchased the 300 acre farm in 1939. Mr. Miller Sr. and his family proceeded to turn the 26 acres of river front into a thriving Watermelon Field and opened the Miller Fruit Stand on the corner of Rt. 7 and Chilly Hollow Rd.
