3322 Locke's Mill Rd, Berryville, VA 22611, USA

It all started back when…. Mr. John U. Miller Sr. purchased the 300 acre farm in 1939. Mr. Miller Sr. and his family proceeded to turn the 26 acres of river front into a thriving Watermelon Field and opened the Miller Fruit Stand on the corner of Rt. 7 and Chilly Hollow Rd. (Today it is known as Nall’s Market). In 1942 Mr. Miller started a “Watermelon Festival” that would feature a variety of old-time games and activities, plus a Fiddling Contest. He would also carve up a truck load of watermelons and personally hand each guest a free slice!

Mr. Miller Sr., having a great appreciation for the new genre of music being played in the area known as “Bluegrass”, teamed up with Don Owens, a music promoter,  and together they founded “Bluegrass Day”, held on August 10,1960 right here at Watermelon Park!   This date marks the birth of the disputably very first  Bluegrass Festival in the country! As the festival grew folks would simply sleep in the fields after the show. Mr. Miller saw a demand for a camping area and they turned the ol’ watermelon patch into Watermelon Park Campground. As the old saying goes… “the rest is history!”

94 Natural Chimneys Ln, Mt Solon, VA 22843

It’s hard to imagine, but the Shenandoah Valley was once the floor of a great inland sea. Centuries ago, as that sea receded, the forces of nature carefully etched out an awe-inspiring formation of solid rock. The seven Natural Chimneys tower as much as 120 feet above the pastoral terrain of the Shenandoah Valley, offering onlookers a sight unrivaled in majesty.

Viewed from one angle, the formations resemble enormous chimneys standing in bleak contrast to the greenery of the Valley. Take a few steps, though, and the chimneys are transformed into the massive turrets of a foreboding medieval castle.

Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia offers more than simply the splendor of towering limestone formations. Both day visitors and those who choose to stay overnight in the seasonal campground find plenty of space and opportunities for recreation, relaxation and fellowship.  The park is open for day use from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Also tour Jefferson’s lovely University of Virginia campus and Walton’s Mountain Museum, which recreates some of the real John Boy’s life. Try tubing and rafting on the nearby James River, enjoy a wine tasting at a local vineyard or dine in downtown Charlottesville. Back at KOA, enjoy the pool, sports field, game room, beaver pond and pedal karts.

Our Name

The Candy Hill name comes from an interesting past. No, it is not what most guess, we are not candy givers nor are we a Christmas themed park. The truth behind the story is that years ago there was a farm house where our campground now stands and as a story book would say, there was a little girl who lived there. She had a dog who passed away and was buried on the hill behind the farm house and luck have it, the dogs name was Candy. From then on the hill was referred to as Candy’s Hill, hence our name, Candy Hill Campground.
