Skyline Drive Parkway Wildlife

Shenandoah National Park is home to all sorts of wildlife. Whether you are driving the Skyline Drive Parkway or hiking the trails you can spot numerous plants and animals that call this mountainous area home.

From azaleas to black bears, the biodiversity in this region cannot be matched. You will notice that the roadsides remain uncut, this is to make sure that the beautiful wildflowers grow all year long. Cardinal flowers, black-eyed susans and golden rods add a variety of colors to the surrounding landscapes.

The fall is the most popular time for people to explore the Park and Drive due to the world famous color changing display of leaves. The resplendent forest provides a lush habitat for many animals including the white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkeys and red foxes.

During the summer months it is common to see fawns and cubs wandering around these parts. Proceed with caution when cruising the Drive because these animals frequently run out in front of cars.

If you wish to look closer, you may pull off the side of the road but be sure to remain in the car and remember that it is unlawful to feed wildlife!

The spring is the perfect time for bird watching in this area. There is an abundance of songbirds preparing to breed. Various species of raptors can also seen hunting or nesting along the ridge-lines. The flora and fauna of this region is incomparable to anywhere else in the world and a must see for any wildlife lover!
